A MUSICAL FIND
Harvest Home by Jay Ungar & Molly Mason (Angel 7243 5 56720 2 5)
I found this CD at a garage sale and picked it up because it looked
interesting. Click here for a photo.
The first time I heard it I thought it was the most achingly beautiful,
flawlessly played, superbly recorded, and emotionally moving music I had
ever heard. I liked it a lot, too.
I waited a week or so before re-listening because I felt my initial judgment
may have been somewhat emotionally overblown. No, I was correct. On
repeated listening it is just as great as I thought it was the first time.
I am not familiar with Jay Ungar* or his music but he composed “Ashokan
Farewell,” which Ken Burns used as the theme music for his TV series, The
Civil War. Like me, you perhaps heard the music and had no idea as to
who wrote it.
In addition to “Ashokan Farewell,” I found “Solstice Hymn, Prairie Spring,
and Thanksgiving Waltz” particularly moving. Jay Ungar’s “Harvest Home
Suite,” performed with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra is absolutely
amazing.
You really need to hear this.

played. I fully intend to check more of them out.
